Intrathecal Therapies
Implantable Drug-Delivery Systems require placement of catheter into the spinal canal to deliver medications directly into the intrathecal space around the spinal cord. The other end of the catheter connects to a small programmable infusion pump that is buried under the skin in the abdomen. The pump is refilled with morphine or baclofen periodically.
Intrathecal baclofen is recommended to control severe spasticity that cannot be controlled by oral medications or physical therapy modalities.
Dr. Bryan Visser was the first physiatrist to offer implantable drug-delivery system in Western Michigan in 1993.
Once our physiatrists determine that you are a good candidate for Intrathecal therapy, our local neurosurgeons will surgically implant the pump. Our physiatrists do the postoperative management.
If you believe or have been advised by your doctor that you can benefit from this procedure, please call our office.
