Massage Therapy
Massage is one of the oldest treatment modalities in medicine. It is useful to mobilize soft tissue fluids, reduce swelling, increase local blood flow and decrease muscle soreness or stiffness. It can moderate pain as well as prevent or eliminate tissue adhesions. It can also facilitate relaxation.
Our physiatrist will usually prescribe massage therapy as an adjunct of a more comprehensive, multidisciplinary musculoskeletal rehabilitation program. It is never a stand alone treatment in our physical medicine protocol. Most insurance companies currently do not cover Massage Therapy as billable service and patients pay out of pocket.
